Cooling Tower Technology

Maximizing Cooling Tower Efficiency

We at TechnoPure have teamed up with a consortium of today’s most innovative and technologically advanced minds. In doing so, we have evolved to become a premier source of indoor environmental and water quality products. The following is a description of our cooling tower system and how it works alone and in tandem with side stream filtration to create our Hybrid Water purification system.

COST OF WATER VS. SAVINGS

COST OF REPLACEMENT PUMPS, SUMPS, CORRODED PIPES AND TOWERS

Unbalanced water and corrosive chemicals significantly reduce equipment and piping life.

SEWER AND WATER COST (MUNICIPALITY)

Excessive blow downs means massive amounts of make up water generating large municipality bill and putting a huge strain on the environment.

Extra charges from Municipalities to treat the chemicals put down the sewer during blow downs.

TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS

How do you reduce or remove the TDS in your water? Common water filters and water purification systems:

  1. Carbon Filtration

Charcoal, a form of carbon with a high surface area, adsorbs (or sticks to) many compounds, including some toxic compounds. Water is passed through activated charcoal to remove contaminants. The filter is then backwashed to clean the carbon of the contaminants it has collected.

Volume of backwash water needed and size of filters would make this an unviable alternative.

  2. Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis works by forcing water under great pressure against a semi-permeable membrane that allows water molecules to pass through while excluding most contaminants. RO is the most thorough method of water purification available. It is an extremely slow and expensive process.

Not a scalable technology to the needs required from a cooling tower.

  3. Distillation

Distillation involves boiling the water to produce water vapor. The water vapor then rises to a cooled surface where it can condense back into a liquid and be collected. Because the dissolved solids are not normally vaporized, they remain in the boiling solution.

This would require more cooling towers to be built. Not a good capital investment.

  4. Deionization (DI)

Water is passed between a positive cathode and a negative annode. Ion selective membranes allow the positive ions to separate from the water toward the negative electrode and the negative ions toward the positive electrode. High purity de-ionized water results. The water is usually passed through a reverse osmosis unit first to remove nonionic organic contaminants.

Non scalable to the size required for cooling towers

  5. Oxidation / Ionization With TechnoPure Revolutionary Hybrid Water Purification Technology

Water is passed between a positive Cathode and a negative Anode. The Hydrogen is adsorbed from the water molecule itself leaving the free oxygen to combine as O2. Oxygen is a powerful oxidizer that not only burns up organic matter but also flocculates any particulates enlarging there size and making them easier to filter.

Since we are not looking to drink cooling tower water and because we are enlarging the particulate matter Zeolite filtration (3-5um) is adequate to substantially reduce TDS. Pressure differential monitoring of the side stream filters will initiate automatic backwashing of filters, continuously optimizing the removal of solids.

HOW WE COMBAT SCALE

Calcium crystal exists in no less than three forms. The two forms most commonly found are:

Trigonal

Orthorhombic

Where the opportunity occurs, ions, atoms, or molecules arrange themselves in position of least energy and more symmetrical and regular crystal forms.

The transformation of trigonal to orthorhombic is much more rapid when in contact with water containing dissolved calcium carbonate.  One way to speed up this transformation is to induce a magnetic field which affects the intermolecular forces and, as a result, changes the crystalline structure of scale from aragonite to calcite, which has a higher solubility.  This effect makes water more capable of dissolving the existing scale build-up encrustations which, in the form of “lime sludge”, can easily be captured by side stream filtration.

MUCKING

With the protection offered by TechnoPure’s side stream filtration and water conditioning there is a significantly reduced need for mucking. Removing TDS from solution before it has a chance to settle and form sludge on the bottom of the tower leads to fewer shut downs for mucking and less time down when there is a need for mucking.

ELECTRICAL EFFICIENCY

An even less noticeable, but perhaps even more significant, benefit of the TechnoPureTM technology, is its ability to extend the life of equipment such as heaters, pumps, and the surface of equipment, by eliminating the chemicals that accelerate corrosion and cause breakdowns.

As you can see, in real terms, even if the hard numbers only indicated a break-even situation, we will still be cutting costs that may not show up for a year, and may be visible only by some inexplicable decrease in costs, or increase in revenues elsewhere.

OXIDATION

Electronic Oxidation:
Through our microprocessor based controller, our TechnoPure unit applies low amperage, low voltage power across our titanium plates with a proprietary coating. This produces electrolysis of the water molecules and separates the H2O into hydrogen and oxygen. The free hydrogen and free oxygen molecules recombine to allow us to oxidize the water. We are using the base components of water to purify itself, the perfect solution for non-chemical water treatment.

IONIZATION

Copper Zinc Ionization:
Through our microprocessor based controller, our TechnoPure unit applies low amperage, low voltage power across our copper-zinc plates. This ionization process releases low residual levels, .4-.7 PPM, of ionic copper (CU++) and ionic zinc (ZN++) in the water.

Both elements are responsible for bacteria and algae control. The NSF and EPA have recognized for many years the efficiency of these residuals as an excellent alternate sanitizer to chlorine. This process of adding low levels of these residuals also satisfies the water’s aggressiveness for metals.
